About us

Airborne Projects is a Portuguese start-up company, part of the European Space Agency’s Technology Transfer Program (ESA BIC) for the last three years. The ESA BIC program enable entrepreneurs to receive comprehensive business and technical support to set up their business using space technology for non-space industrial and commercial uses. Apart of the development of an Auto Docking System for Battery Swapping for zero down-time drone operation behind the ESA’s scope, Airborne Projects develops and sells drone related products and technology. Since 2019, Airborne Projects is also part of the Astropreneurs Space Start-up Accelerator Program. Airborne Projects’ work is focused in three main areas: turnkey hardware and software for unmanned aerial systems; aerial mapping and precision agriculture; concept, design and prototype unmanned aircraft systems.

Our History

Founders

Paulo Neves

CEO & Co-Founder

Paulo Neves was born in Faro, Portugal, in 1989. He received in 2014, the M.Sc. Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Beira Interior (UBI), with the dissertation on a system for "Automatic Landing and Battery Exchange for Unmanned Vehicles”. In 2015, together with Pedro Alves, he founded Airborne Projects.
Airborne Projects is a Portuguese start-up company, focused on UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) hardware and software turnkey solutions. The company is part of the European Space Agency’s Technology Transfer Program (ESA BIC) for the last three years. In 2016 he moved to Poland, where he started to work at Nokia, on the Linux BTS Distribution Maintainer as a Yocto Build System Developer. Since 2018, he also is a Technical Team Lead, where he coordinates a team that takes care of Yocto (embedded build system) related subjects as well as general build system of components like Yocto, Makefiles, CMake, Autotool and Kernel build system.

Pedro Alves

CTO & Co-Founder

Pedro Alves was born in Gandra, Portugal, in 1991. He received in 2014, the M.Sc. Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Beira Interior (UBI), with the dissertation "Low Reynolds Number Propeller Performance Measurement in Wind Tunnel Test Rig”. During the summers in 2011 and 2012 he worked as an engineer trainee at Aerotecnica Lda. In 2011, he was part of the winner team of The Air Cargo Challenge. Between November of 2014 and July of 2015, he was assistant researcher at UBI, working in the “PIEFATraS” and “CHANGE”projects. In 2015, together with Paulo Neves, he founded Airborne Projects. Airborne Projects is a Portuguese start-up company, focused on UAS hardware and software turnkey solutions. Also, it is part of the European Space Agency’s Technology Transfer Program (ESA BIC) for the last three years. Currently, he also is a Ph.D. Candidate at UBI, with the thesis “Thrust Based Passive Variable Pitch Propeller Rotor”, in the framework of the national project “EMaDeS”.
